Did you know that sun damage can have short-term and long-term effects on your eyes?

Ray Ban Sunglasses.

The sun radiates three types of ultraviolet rays – UVA, UVB and UVC. It is these first two – UVA and UVB – that can have a variety of effects on your vision if your eyes are not properly protected.

One of the more common short-term conditions is known as photokeratitis – essentially sunburn of the eyes. Just as sunburn on your skin is painful and uncomfortable, photokeratitis can cause inflamed, sore and itchy eyes that feel gritty too. In extreme cases, the condition can result in temporary vision loss, but all symptoms do recover on their own within a comparatively short period of time.

On the contrary, longer-term problems cannot be corrected quite so easily. Macular degeneration is an example of one such condition that occurs as a result of continued UV exposure. If left untreated this will cause almost inevitable blindness, but depending on which type of macular degeneration you have – ‘wet’ or ‘dry’ – the speed at which you lose your vision will vary.
